Modern machine production has all but replaced the craftsman in modern flutemaking. Today's so-called ‘handmade' flute is machined to the point where all that's left to the craftsman is assembly.
It's economics.
Machining is simply cheaper and faster. Just as Tiffany and Gorham were staffed by several floors of metalsmiths and jewelers in 19th century New York, they fell victim to the industrial revolution. Now machines manufacture most of their line.
The Lunn flute makes no such compromise.
Master flutemaker John Lunn works entirely by hand with traditional forming & chasing techniques to create a precision flute and a work of art. Using no pre-made molds or parts, his hammers and stakes replace milling machines and turning centers to build each instrument on its own from raw precious metal.
